Loop or Spiral

Field note 22

I think many systems do something stranger than either a pure loop or a pure spiral.

A loop returns.

A spiral returns, but not to exactly the same place.

Most living systems seem to do both at once.

Think about a year.

Spring comes back.
Summer comes back.
Winter comes back.

That’s the loop.

But you’re not the same person who was there last spring.

That’s the spiral.

The Earth is doing something similar.

We draw its orbit as a circle around the Sun, but the Sun is moving through the galaxy too.

In motion the Earth isn’t tracing a flat circle. It’s more like a corkscrew through space.

The same thing happens psychologically.

You think:

“Didn’t I already learn this lesson?”

Maybe.

But now you’re learning it:

  • with more responsibility,
  • with different people,
  • from a different side,
  • at a different depth.

The lesson loops.

The perspective spirals.

And then there are stranger systems.

Sometimes they don’t spiral smoothly. They seem to orbit a pattern.

You get pulled toward the same themes.

Not because you’re stuck, but because those themes are part of your shape.

A tree doesn’t “graduate” from roots.

It keeps revisiting roots forever.

But the revisiting produces growth.

That’s neither a loop or a spiral exactly.

It’s more like a living pattern deepening itself.

Similar to a feather. (Field Note 20)

Tiny changes in angle created a pattern much larger than the structure creating it.

Maybe life works similarly.

You don’t move in circles.

You don’t move in spirals.

You move through a field where small shifts in orientation create entirely new visible patterns.

From inside it feels like:

“Why am I here again?”

From farther away it looks like:

“Ah. The same theme. Different octave.”

Growth often looks like spirals.

Maybe life is more like a pattern that keeps returning to itself while simultaneously becoming more itself.

A kind of remembering that creates something new each time it remembers.

“I’m here again.”

And somehow they are never quite the same place.
